What is Acne? |
|
If you have acne, you're
far from alone. By the age of 24, more than 90 percent of all
adolescents and young adults will have had acne at one time or another
-- and up to 50 percent of all adults will experience acne after they
turn 25.
Although acne is one of the world's most common skin ailments, it is
also one of the most misunderstood. For example, acne is not
caused by eating greasy foods or chocolate, or because of poor hygiene.
Instead, acne develops when the skin's sebaceous glands make extra oil,
or sebum -- a natural response to the hormone imbalances common in young
adults. |
 |
|
|
| How is the Skin Effected? |
| The excess oil combines with skin
cells and clogs your pores. Factor in the normal skin bacteria
that lives in pores, and you've got a recipe for inflammation and
redness -- in other words, acne. A number of other factors,
including pollution, wearing headbands and helmets, and stress can cause
or aggravate the condition.
Unfortunately, skin medications and
antibiotic therapy are not always successful in treating moderate to
severe acne -- a situation that can be extremely frustrating. The
good news is that researchers have identified a safe, painless way to
destroy P. acnes, the most common bacteria responsible for 80 percent of
the acne found in teens and young adults. |
| |
| How can acne self-destruct? |
| Researchers have learned that
something as simple as light holds the key to clearing up stubborn acne.
In a nutshell, here's how it works: when acne is radiated with blue and
red LED light at specific wavelengths, the bacteria self-destructs and
inflammation is decreased. Your breakouts fade, and your skin
heals. |

|
| |
| Who can benefit from treatment? |
| LED technology benefits anyone
suffering with mild to moderate inflammatory acne caused by P. acnes
bacteria. Ask your technician for a diagnosis of your acne.
He or she will be able to tell you if you're a candidate. |
| |
| What is the Omnilux? |
| Omnilux is a high tech device that
utilizes LED technology to effectively and consistently target and
destroy P. acnes bacteria. The Omnilux uses blue LEDs to destroy
bacteria and stimulate cell growth. It also uses red LEDs to
decrease inflammation and pore size and limit oil production in the
future. Best of all,
Omnilux is painless and non-invasive. |
| |
| How Does it Work? |
| A natural chemical produced by P.
acnes bacteria (called Coproporphyrin III) attaches itself to the
bacteria's membranes. When the Omnilux radiates this chemical with
blue light at specific wavelengths, it produces and releases oxygen
molecules that cause the bacteria to self-destruct. The light also
stimulates your body's own natural processes to heal and rejuvenate your
skin. Alternating Omnilux
blue treatments with Omnilux red treatments adds the unique advantage of
reducing pore size and oil production. |
 |
| |
| What areas can I treat? |
| The most common areas for acne
treatment are the face, chest, back, and arms, but any area on your body
that has acne can be treated with the Omnilux. |
| |
| What happens during treatment? |
| Over the course of four weeks, eight
Omnilux treatments will alternate between blue and red LEDs.
Depending on your type of acne, your doctor may also have you use a face
wash and gel for best results.
You will have to remove any makeup or sun
block before the treatment, and you will also be asked to wear safety
goggles. The light will be positioned close to your face, and each
session will take approximately 20 minutes. Your technician may
adjust the time.
Treatments are completely pain
free. That's it -- when you're done, you can go right back to your
normal routine. There's no downtime and no skin redness. |
 |
| |
| What can you expect, in terms of results? |
| Some people begin to see results as
soon as the third or fourth treatment, and for most clients, acne will
continue to clear for 8-12 weeks after the treatments are complete.
When both blue and red LEDs are used, a typical client sees an 80
percent reduction in acne in 12 weeks.
A small percentage of clients will not
respond to LED treatment. If this is the case, your technician can
recommend some additional or alternative treatments to treat your acne,
which may include topical creams or antibiotics. |
|

|
| How long do the effects last? |
| For most clients, acne is gone for
six months. In some cases, touch-up treatments (typically two to
four treatments) may be necessary. |
| |
| Is the treatment safe? |
| Not only is the treatment safe, it's
completely painless. |
| |
| How long are the treatments? |
| The treatment lasts for
approximately 20 minutes; however, your technician can adjust the amount
of time if he or she finds it appropriate. |
